Abstract: Clinical deterioration in the hospital is often preceded by abnormal vital signs. The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is a validated composite score based on vital sign measurements. We assess the effectiveness of implementing NEWS and a nursing workflow that triggers best practice alerts at our institution by looking at changes in patient deterioration pre and post implementation.

Learning Objective 1: Explain the considerations in setting up EHR data to appropriately compare the effectiveness of the NEWS implementation by assessing patient deterioration in an inpatient setting.
