Description

Abstract: Scanned outside medical records from the Electronic Medical Record lead to extremely time consuming manual review to perform data abstraction. We evaluated utilizing the Abbyy FineReader Optical Character Recognition software to convert scanned images into searchable records, to streamline the data abstraction process and expedite data mining for clinical research projects. Transforming scanned images into FineReader PDF documents allowed tagging keywords of interest to greatly facilitate data abstraction.

Learning Objective 1: Evaluate the effectiveness of an Optical Character Recognition tool to facilitate text mining of scanned outside medical records containing valuable required clinical research information.
